First Lady Michelle Obama Revamps School Lunches And Keeps Her Family Active

First Lady Michelle Obama teams up with Rachael Ray to give kids healthier lunches and talks about ways she keeps her family healthy and active.

Rachael Ray and the First Lady are collaborating to put healthy foods into schools across the USA :

“Beginning in the fall kids are going to see more healthy portion sizes, they’re going to see more whole grains, they’re going to see more fresh fruits and vegetables. So that now parents can send their kids to school knowing that the meals they’re getting are of a high quality, they’re going to give their kids the energy they need and that’s just one of the challenges of being a parent.”

Rachael asks the First Lady if she exercises with her daughters, Malia and Sasha:

“We’re a huge sports family. That goes back to, my father, [who] had MS and when you grow up with a parent that struggles with movement you don’t take movement for granted. So me and my brother, we did sports and I married a man who’s a basketball sports fanatic so we passed that on to our kids. I work out as often as I can, usually every day and when we can, we exercise with the kids. I usually exercise after the girls go to school, but they play basketball, my older daughter plays tennis, we play with her. Barack helps to coach Sasha’s basketball team so we do make sports a part of our lifestyle and that’s the other leg of “Let’s Move“. It’s nutrition, but it’s also movement.”

On her family’s Super Bowl plans:

“We’ll probably watch it at home. It’ll probably be a quiet Super Bowl this year.”

The first lady’s favorite Super Bowl food:

“Super Bowl food, you know nachos are always good, it’s fresh tomato sauce and you get it on sort of a god quality tortilla.”

Rachael suggests you can build a healthy nacho, and Michelle agrees: “Yeah you can do it. You can do it. Yeah, love nachos and President loves avocado. That’s his favorite snack food, a chip dipped in some guac.”

The First Lady speaks on her oldest daughter’s desire for privacy:

“She’s growing up, she’s fabulous, but she’s thirteen now so she wants her business to be her business.”

She loves her job, but misses some of the anonymity of life before The White House:

“That’s why I have my little secret Target runs because I can do things undercover if it’s just quick. I do miss it, but I have the best job on the planet. I mean, I have this wonderful platform that we can shine the light on so many important issues and galvanize the country in ways that I would never be able to do if I wasn’t first lady… But there are definitely times when you want to make one run to your kid’s soccer game without a motorcade. You know? So you begin to value anonymity and you lose that, but it’s a small price to pay for being able to serve the country you love.”

The full interview will air on the Rachael Ray Show on Wednesday, February 1, 2012.
