Looking for a fun getaway for this Fourth of July? Mystic, Connecticut, offers a combination of historical fun and modern delights that will make the getaway extra special. Here's a great three-day agenda for where to go and where to stay for a weekend trip surrounding Independence Day.
July 3 – Mystic Aquarium
Begin your Mystic getaway with a fun day at Mystic Aquarium where the kids can get up close and personal with stingrays, watch a sea lions show, and even see sharks being fed. The habitats, sea life, and shows offer so much fun for families. Of course, for a more intimate experience—and for an additional fee—you can also take part in one of several “encounters” programs with penguins, beluga whales, and more.
And for a delicious dinner, head to nearby Noank to Abbott’s Lobster, a renowned spot for delicious seafood.
July 4 – Mystic Seaport

Mystic Seaport is the place to be on Independence Day. From 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., you can step into the past with their annual 19th Century celebration. From crafts for kids to a picnic on the Village Green to a concert by the Mystic Silver Cornet Band, there’s so much to do all day long. Admit it: you totally want to party like it’s 1876.
July 5 – Olde Mistick Village
Head to Olde Mistick Village in Mystic to check out the Mystic Carvers Club Show. Master woodcarvers display and sell their intricate carvings from 9:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the Apple Orchard. (If it rains, this is postponed until July 6.) While you are there, take a peek around the village to see the unique setting filled with flowers, duck ponds, and a waterwheel. And drop into the shops for a fun array of handcrafted items and modern gifts. Hungry? Ten Clams is an affordable stop for a decent, tasty lunch. All menu items are $10 or less—and their buttery Connecticut lobster roll is worth a try. But if you really love fish, head to the nearby Go Fish, also located at Olde Mistick Village, for their extensive offering. You won’t find a Connecticut-style lobster roll here (theirs is in the Maine style—a pity), but there are a number of other delicious options on the menu.
