Joel Embiid has made NBA history by becoming the ninth player to score 70+ in a game. On Jan. 22, 2024, the Philadelphia 76ers star led his team to a 133-123 victory against the San Antonio Spurs. The basketball player set a career-high with 18 rebounds and five assists (via BBC).
The NBA MVP’s 70 points beat the franchise record of 68, set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1967. When Joel Embiid broke the 76ers record, they called a timeout to allow him to leave the game. As he left, the star player received a standing ovation at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Embiid noted that his mindset “is to attack, dominate offensively and defensively,” and that’s his mindset for all of his games. 76ers coach Nick Nurse stated that the basketball player’s “sheer size gets him a lot of stuff around the basket, gets him a lot of free throws.” However, he acknowledged that shooting required skill, which Joel Embiid had. The coach exclaimed that once the Philadelphia 76ers star “gets motivated like that, anything can happen” (via Guardian).
With Joel Embiid making headlines, many are curious about his family.
Joel Embiid has one kid
The NBA player first met his now-wife Anne de Paula in 2018. The couple tied the knot in Southampton, New York, on July 22, 2023. The wedding ceremony was beautiful and extravagant.
Joel Embiid shares a son with Anne de Paula. The couple welcomed Arthur Elijah de Paula Embiid on Sept. 17, 2020. Their firstborn is named after the Philadelphia 76ers star’s younger brother, Arthur, who unfortunately passed away in a car crash in 2014.
In 2021, Anne told ESPN that her partner and son have a close bond. She said, “They are like best friends. When Arthur sees him, there is no one else in the room. It is the most beautiful thing ever” (via People).
Joel Embiid, too, has talked about his son previously. When he was presented with the MVP title in May 2023, he exclaimed, “He’s the main reason why I’m really here. Becoming a father changed my whole life, and I just wanted to show him a good example, and I’m glad he is here with us” (via People).
