Drew Barrymore on Playboy & Parenting: ‘I Never Knew There’d Be an Internet’

Drew Barrymore recently shared a lengthy but “vulnerable” post on parenting. The actress and talk show host opened up about raising her two daughters, making bold choices, and how her kids have no “guardrails” when it comes to technology. She also reflected on her decision to pose for Playboy in her 20s without the realization that there was the internet. The lengthy essay post on Instagram grabbed the attention of many fans and celebrities.

Check out what Drew Barrymore had to say about her exposure to “too much access and excess” and how that translated to her daughters.

A few days ago, Drew Barrymore expressed her honest thoughts on parenting and how she deals with her two daughters having access to technology and “adult environments.” She began by reflecting on her past as a kid when hearing the word “no” was a challenge. The actress opened up about having significant autonomy. Drew noted that she “couldn’t accept authority of any kind.”

Drew proceeded to talk about being more protective of her kids in general. She recognized living in a good world with numerous opportunities. However, she also realized that her kids were in the same boat. Drew mentioned the difference between her experiences as a kid and her own children’s world in the present. The talk show host noted that her time had rules and a sense of what would constitute an “adults only game.”

Drew also spoke of her Playboy experience. She said, “When I did a chaste artistic moment in Playboy in my early 20s, I thought it would be a magazine that was unlikely to resurface because it was paper. I never knew there would be an internet. I didn’t know so many things.”

Speaking about how she was emancipated at 14 and starring in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial as a child, Drew noted that she lived in a world of privilege. Meanwhile, the actress spoke about her kids, her need to protect them, and the kind of fast-moving world they live in. She noted that there were no “guardrails” against technology and the internet.

Continuing with the parenting techniques she adopted, Drew noted that she got her daughter a phone on her 11th birthday. Meanwhile, she stated that it was “only to be used on weekends for a limited time with no social media.” Soon, this only made her realize that she wasn’t ready to give her kids a phone.

Drew ended her post with a note to parents about dealing with children’s “discomfort in having to wait.” She said, “I am going to become the parent I needed. The adult I needed.”
