“Nobody Wants This” star Justine Lupe clarifies a comment she previously made about being pregnant while filming the series. In late September, Lupe revealed on Instagram that the show “carried me through my first 5+ months of pregnancy with so much warmth” while the camera made her look “not pregnant.” She wrote that the cast and crew weren’t immediately aware of it and found out while on set.
Now, Lupe is sharing why she didn’t instantly share the news of her pregnancy with the cast and crew. The actor offers a clarification because of the “misleading” stories that stemmed from her previous statement. She further discusses the complications of being early-stage pregnant and opens up about her comfortable experience on set.
Justine Lupe shares ‘Nobody Wants This’ cast and crew knew about pregnancy once ‘it was safe to share’
In her recent Instagram post, Justine Lupe reveals that the “Nobody Wants This” cast and crew learned about her pregnancy “as soon as it was safe to share.” She shares how it’s “emotionally risky to share too early” considering the higher risk of a miscarriage during the initial stages. Lupe then describes her “cozy” experience from the set and even mentions “EVERY single person” who took care of her.
Lupe recalled how Kristen Bell, a mother of two, ran around screaming in a sheet mask after learning the news. In fact, the latter “vowed to make this experience as cushiony and sweet and soft as possible. The 35-year-old previously described Bell as a motherhood “champion.”
Additionally, Justine Lupe claims she found comfort in showrunner Erin Foster, who was also pregnant while filing “Nobody Wants This.” She describes Foster as someone who “eased any worry I may have had about working around it.” Lupe also thanks stylist and costume designer Negar Ali Kline and her team for coming in every week for refittings as her body and baby bump constantly changed. The actor credits cinematographer Adrian Peng Correia (twice) for shooting “in a way that serviced the character but also me personally.”
Justine Lupe states that Netflix executives frequently stopped by to congratulate her on being pregnant while filming “Nobody Wants This.” She also reveals there were “FOUR pregnant women” on the series set. Moreover, Lupe addresses the narrative “that it’s a death sentence of sorts to become a mother in this industry.” This narrative, she says, goes on about how “your career will be over” once you are pregnant.
Lupe acknowledges that this narrative has a basis but believes “things are changing.” She explains seeing some of her close friends accomplish massive heights and “do some bonkers incredible work pregnant or as new moms.” The actor calls this “hugely expansive” and finally highlights the importance of this message “for women.”
“Nobody Wants This” premiered on Netflix on September 26 and is now streaming on the platform.
