Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon neutral oil
- 1 red onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 680 grams ground turkey
- Kosher salt
- Freshly ground black pepper
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 can chopped tomatoes
- 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 1 ½ cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Shredded cheddar, for garnish
- Thinly sliced green onions, for garnish
Preparation
- To make your turkey chili recipe in a slow cooker, you need to first prepare the paste. For this, take a large skillet and heat oil over medium-high heat.
- Then, toss your onion into the skillet along with bell pepper and mix. Cook the mixture until the onion is translucent and the bell pepper becomes soft.
- Now, mix in ground turkey and cook some more. Make sure to stir occasionally to avoid it sticking to the bottom. Cook the turkey until it turns golden brown in color. Your ground turkey doesn’t have to be completely cooked through at this point.
- Once cooked, season with salt and pepper. Then, mix in some garlic and tomato paste in the mixture and cook until fragrant (should take about 2 minutes). Now, transfer it all to a slow cooker to get the recipe going.
- Then, add the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker — tomatoes, black beans, kidney beans, chicken broth, chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Now, cook the turkey chili mixture on high for about 4 hours or until it has thickened.
- Lastly, check the seasoning of your turkey chili recipe and if it is to your loved ones’ taste. Add more salt and pepper per your family’s preference. Garnish your dish with cheese, green onion, and other ingredients you like to top your chili with.
You can also add corn and jalapeños to your turkey chili recipe or swap cheese for sour cream or sliced avocado for some added creaminess. Even drizzling on some hot sauce for added heat isn’t a bad idea. However, be mindful and leave aside your kids’ portions before you decide on amping up the spice level of your turkey chili recipe. Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge to enjoy whenever you want. The leftovers of this recipe can keep well in the refrigerator for around four days.
