Diaper Pail Showdown: Dékor vs. Diaper Genie

Let’s get one thing out of the way: a garbage pail designed specifically for diapers is a must from day 1 when you have a baby (trust us on this!). A diaper pail will lock in and neutralize odors, and allow you to contain enormous amounts of diapers, so you don’t have to run to the outdoor trash bin every hour. Because who the time or energy for that? But which one is the absolute best?

The Diaper Genie is the original diaper pail and it’s still considered the gold standard. It seals diapers in a scented film to protect against germs and odors. That said, since its launch many competitors have popped up, the most viable of which is Dékor.

So how does Dékor compare to Diaper Genie? Here’s a look at the pros and cons, so you can make an informed decision on this very important purchase!

Dékor Pros:

  • Simply step on the foot pedal to open the lid and then drop the diaper through the trap door. Your hands never touch the diaper pail, so there’s no need to take both hands off of your baby (never take your hands off your baby when he or she is on a changing table!).
  • Easy to clean.
  • Feature a hidden childproof lock to lock the trap door when needed, a childproof button to keep the top frame closed and a childproof cutter to cut the refill liners when emptying.
  • They use continuous liner so you’re not being wasteful by wrapping each diaper individually.
  • Closes silently.
  • Comes assembled with a pre-installed liner.
  • End-of-liner marking to let you know when it’s time to refill.
  • Converts from diaper pail to trash can.
  • Multiple color options.

Complete set includes a refill bag and cartridge for $39.99 .

Dékor Cons:

  • Holds only up to 45 newborn diapers (the Dékor Plus is larger and holds up to 60 newborn diapers; they also have a mini that holds up to 25).
  • Might require a little bending if you’re very tall.
  • Sometimes smell escapes when you open lid.

Diaper Genie Pros:

  • Simply step on the foot pedal to open the lid and then drop the diaper through the trap door. Your hands never touch the diaper pail, so there’s no need to take both hands off of your baby (never take your hands off your baby when he or she is on a changing table!).
  • Easy to clean.
  • It’s tall enough so you don’t have to bend to toss in the diaper.
  • They use continuous liner so you’re not being wasteful by wrapping each diaper individually.
  • Easy to refill liner bags and replace.
  • Holds up to 270 diapers per refill.
  • When opening the pail to put in a diaper, you won’t smell anything.

Complete set includes a refill bag and cartridge for $34.95.

Diaper Genie Cons:

  • Need to change the odor controlling cartridge every month.
  • Does not close silently.
  • To make more room in the bag inside the pail, you  need to push down on the dirty diapers.
  • If you allow many diapers to accumulate the odor-blocking filter may not be strong enough.

Bottom line: It’s a tough call as both options are very similar in function, fashion and price, but because Dékor has an option to add garbage bags instead of diaper refills, childproofing and because it has a marking to let you know when it’s time to refill, it wins out. You really can’t go wrong with either however.
