Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba Talk Motherhood And Success

In the new issue of Glam Belleza Latina, celebrity moms Jessica Alba and Salma Hayek get candid.  The busy actresses share everything from beauty tricks to motherhood to pregnancy weight gain.

Salma Hayek Pinault:

On the societal pressures women face today:  “We’ve got to fight for our confidence every day in modern life because we live in a society that is very harsh to women. You have to be smart and successful and a good mother and beautiful and young and skinny forever.”

On her biggest accomplishments not coming easy:  “Patience is a wonderful skill. It teaches you to enjoy the process and not just the result of things.”

On defining success:  “Success is happiness. If you’ve found the right companion for life, a good relationship with loved ones, if you are healthy—my God, you are immensely successful.”

On 46 being her best age yet:  “I believe that change keeps you young. I’m a late bloomer; I always have been. A lot of women think that this is the [age] when you start getting depressed. To that I say, ‘No, no, no, no, no!’ I’m having the best time of my life.”

On gaining 50 pounds when she was pregnant with daughter Valentina:  “I gained so much weight, I got an opportunity to see myself completely disfigured in many different ways—for a very good reason—and I don’t regret it for a second. That’s when I started appreciating my body. The things that I used to criticize, they were not that bad after all.”

Jessica Alba:

On her glow-from-within beauty advice for her girls:  “I share the same advice that my mom gave me—stay hydrated and sleep well. And that being a beautiful person on the inside is what really matters.”

On her grandmother’s beauty trick:  “When I was growing up, my style icons were my grandmother and my mom—although they had, and still have, very distinct ideas about beauty. My grandmother used only one product for everything: a beautiful matte orange-red lipstick that she also dotted on her cheeks and used to highlight her lids. For her it worked, and it was completely glamorous. Now her signature lip color is one of my favorites.”

On her Latina icons: “I admire Rita Hayworth, Eva Perón, Jennifer Lopez, and Salma Hayek Pinault—all different but all notable Latinas in their own right.”

On her favorite getaway:  “There are so many, but I really love the beauty and serenity of Kyoto, Japan. The towering bamboo forests, the Zen temples, the winding rivers, the beautiful hotels, and the out-of-this-world cuisine make it such a romantic city to visit.”

On when she feels most beautiful: “I feel most beautiful when I am at home, snuggled with Cash and my girls—it’s pure bliss.”
