Start the new year off right with this inspirational art DIY: simply paint quotes on fabric to adorn your child’s walls in 2014. What I love most about this project is that it’s super simple and can be customized for a boy or girl easily. Oh, and did I mention that this DIY is extrememly affordable to make? The supplies cost less than $10, and you may even have most of the materials on hand already.
Supplies:
- small canvas
- fabric paint
- paintbrush
- fabric
- scissors
- staple gun
Instructions:
Step 1: Cut a piece of fabric that is about two inches larger on all sides than your canvas. It doesn’t have to be perfect—just make sure there is enough room to wrap the fabric around the canvas and onto the back a little bit.
Step 2: Center the fabric on top of your canvas, then flip it over so the back of the canvas is facing up, with the fabric underneath. Now it’s time to start stapling. Starting in the middle of one side, stretch the fabric and then staple it down. Do this same thing on the opposite side (across from the first staple) in the middle to keep the stretching even.
Step 3: Repeat this process with the remaining two sides, being sure to pull the fabric each time before stapling so it becomes taught. Continue until the fabric has been secured all the way around, but save the corners for last. When you get to the corners, fold them like hospital corners to keep them neat and tidy before stapling the same way you did the sides.
Step 4: Next, flip your fabric-covered canvas over and pencil in an inspirational word or phrase. Let the kids pick out the phrase or word they want to use to get them involved in the process.
Step 5: Now that you have a guide in pencil, it’s time to add paint. Using fabric paint and a brush, paint the phrase onto your fabric-covered canvas. You may need a couple of coats if you’re using a light fabric paint.
Once dry, it’s ready to hang or set on your child’s desk as an inspirational reminder each day.
