Father’s Day often sneaks up on families and it results in last minute scrambling for DIY projects for the kids to make. Save your empty cans after dinner this week and upcycle them into these cute popsicle stick planters that’ll be perfect for a dad’s desk or office this year. Kids can have fun painting popsicle sticks for the outside of the planter, and you just need to help them assemble it all together. Pick out a plant together (hey, fake ones are great too!) and give it to dad with a ribbon around it for a gift he’ll treasure every day!
Here’s how to make this cute DIY Father’s Day planter:
Supplies:
- Empty food can
- Popsicle sticks
- Paint, various colors
- Paintbrushes
- Glue gun
Step 1: When you finish a canned good, remove the label and wash the can well. Dry completely.
Step 2: Lay out the popsicle sticks on a covered surface and let the kids paint! You will need about 20-30 sticks depending on the size of the can. Whether they paint each one a separate color or keep it extra colorful is totally up to them! Let them dry completely.
Step 3: Moms, you’ll want to take over here! Heat up the glue gun and carefully stick the painted popsicle sticks straight up around the sides of the can. Keep each one right next to each other.
When you reach the end, a popsicle stick may not fit and will leave a small amount of can exposed. That’s OK – that’ll just be the backside!
Fill it with rocks, potting soil and a plant of your choice before the kids give it to a dad in their life for Father’s Day! It’ll be the perfect accessory for his desk. Psst, you could also use a fake plant if you’re not sure he can keep it alive!
