The citizens of his small town are thrilled that they no longer have to eat sardines anymore and can dine on eggs, toast, hamburgers, ice cream, and steak all day every day. The mayor decides to use Flint and his invention to re-invent the town and—with the help of weather girl Sam—attract visitors from across the world.
Of course, the machine is eventually overloaded with food requests and starts making gigantic food which creates a giant weather storm of spaghetti and meatballs. Flint is able to save the day by shutting down the Food Replicator, but not before the entire town is destroyed, although the quick-thinking citizens escape on boats made of grilled cheese. Yum!
One of the things I like about Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is that it is enjoyable for the entire family. I like kid’s movies that have humor that resonates with adults as well kids.
Sam is my favorite character. She’s funny, smart, and adventurous. Growing up she was embarrassed to be a nerd, so she acted dumb so people would like her. Throughout the movie she learns that being smart is a good thing and embraces her intelligence rather than hiding it.
Flint likes Sam, and in an attempt to impress her creates a Jell-O house including a Jell-O piano, pool, statues, and slides. This is one of our favorite scenes in the movie. Flint goes into the Jell-O house and then sticks his hand back out to Sam and says, “Join me!”
I think all of my children wished they could swim in a Jell-O pool during that scene!
My nine year old loved the comedy provided by “Baby Brent.” Brent rose to fame as the poster baby for sardines, but never did anything else. Once the sardine craze ended Brent didn’t know what to do with himself and tried to capitalize on his Baby Brent fame into adulthood. He spends a good part of the movie wearing a diaper, which all my children thought was hilarious.
All my kids can’t wait to see what happens to Baby Brent (who becomes Chicken Brent at the end of the movie) in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. They hope he’s as funny as he was in the first movie.
I loved the ice cream scene. Officer Earl asks Flint to create something special for his son Bobbie’s birthday. Bobbie wakes up to a world of ice cream! The town children are making ice cream angels, having ice cream snowball fights, and sledding down ice cream hills. Flint gets in his first snowball fight and Sam is shocked he’s never thrown a snowball before. Flint responds, “I don’t even know the rules. Is there like a point system, or is it to the death?”
This cracked me up since my kids seem to think snowball fights are to the death!
I’m eagerly anticipating Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. I’m wondering what happens to the Mayor, if Flint and Sam will get married, and if Flint’s dad will learn to use a computer! We can’t wait until it arrives in theatres this September!
Watching this movie made my kids hungry! If you are looking for some fun food activities with your kids check out these ideas.
