Planning for an Emergency

I looked up from my book to see Elizabeth, her face a mixture of panic and determination.

“We have a first aid kit.”

“No! We need an emergency kit!”

I tried to figure out where my three-year-old had heard such a thing and then her older brother walked in. “We really need an earthquake kit, Mama. And a fire escape route.”

I should have known this was her brother’s idea. Mr. Always Prepared likes to know about things like emergency exits and what to do in an earthquake. I put my book down.

“Well, we live in a pretty tiny house, so if there’s a fire, just come into my room or I’ll come to your room and then we’ll go out the front door or the back door.”

“What if the fire is between our rooms?”

“In the two feet between our rooms? I guess, then, you need to open your window and kick out the screen.”

“I don’t think I’m tall enough.”

“Good point. In that case, I’ll walk through the fire to get to you.”

Joseph nodded thoughtfully. “That’s a good plan.”

“But we need an emergency kit!” Elizabeth insisted.

Joseph added, “The Disney Channel said so.”

“Ah. Well, we’ll get an emergency kit together and put it in our garage.”

“And we should really have a zombie attack kit.”

“I’ll add that to the emergency kit.”

To be honest, the kids are right. We really do need an earthquake kit and a fire escape plan. It’s now on my list of things to do this month.

Are you prepared for an emergency?
