What does this recall mean for you?
This recall is due to beetles found in the product, as well as in a plant in Michigan where the product is made. The recall only affects the powder formula not the liquid forms of Similac.
While the idea of beetles and bugs in general is stomach turning, especially in food, these beetles are ordinary garden variety beetles found in houses and offices in the area, luckily. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that there is no immediate health risk although, there is a possibility of infants experiencing symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat if they ingest them.
What should you do if you have powdered Similac on your shelf?
1. The Similac that is being recalled is powdered Similac in plastic containers, and in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.
2. To immediately find out if the Similac you have is included in the recall you should visit www.similac.com and enter the lot number on the container, or phone the hotline (800)986-8850.
3. Most importantly if your child shows signs of gastrointestinal discomfort please see your physician.
