Nina Dobrev And Other Stars Celebrate We Day In Toronto

Nina Dobrev and Joe Jonas team up to host the We Day festivities in Canada and singer Nelly Furtado announces a big donation.

‘The Vampire Diaries’ star shared co-hosting duties with singer Joe Jonas at Free The Children’s WE Day in Toronto. For those who haven’t heard of it before, We Day is a celebration of positivity:

“At We Day, youth from across North America join together to celebrate the positive actions they are taking and to build the momentum of the movement of young people making a difference in their communities and around the world. Through We Day, youth learn that it is cool to care. The We Day movement lives online at Weday.com, an online hub dedicated to educating, engaging and empowering a generation of socially conscious youth. Featuring videos by world-renowned celebrities and speakers, newspaper articles about timely global and social issues, and countless other resources, Weday.com is social justice education at its best.”

WE Day started in 2007 and has been attended by over 160,000 people. The youth involved have raised more than $5.4 million to support organizations and in the past year have volunteered 1.7 million hours and gathered up more than 500,000 pounds of food for shelters.

Singer Nelly Furtado held a press conference this afternoon during the event to announce that she was donating $1 million to the initiative. She told the crowd: “I was inspired by the girls in Kenya, and I’m so inspired by all of you. With car washes, birthday money and bake sales you’re helping children around the world. And I’m proud of you.”
