November is International Drum Month

Sponsored by the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC), a non-profit corporation dedicated to the advancement, understanding and enjoyment of drums and percussion, International Drum Month encourages people to drum by putting the sticks in their hands, literally. Through their website, you can get a free pair of drum sticks and an instructional book or DVD. Simply visit the website to obtain a form that you can take to your local drum or music store. Have an employee sign it and attach the store’s business card to it, then mail the completed form into the Percussion Marketing Council to get a free Beginner’s Package for drummers. While it may seem like a crazy thing to celebrate, why not? Exposure to music and music education can foster brain growth and development in babies and young children, as well as provide them with rich experiences that contribute to their overall well-being. During November, make an effort to expose your children to all types of drumming and percussion in honor of International Drum Month. Have your own percussion ensemble by pulling out the pots and pans and wooden spoons. Make your own shakers using an empty cardboard tube, dried beans and tape. Attend a percussion performance. Check out the marching band during halftime. So, now you know about it, will you celebrate International Drum Month in your home? If so, please share some of your own ideas on how to celebration below!
