Things To Do With Your Kids In Tasmania

Just 150 miles south of mainland Australia, the island of Tasmania is a wonderful place to explore with kids.

Tasmania is rich with World Heritage Wilderness and has a unique culture, heritage and history.

It’s all about outdoor recreation and adventure in Tasmania! Because of this islands size, you can hike to the top of a mountain and be back at the beach in the same day. Tasmania has coastal cruises and boating adventures on its many waterways, or go for the gusto rafting, canoeing and kayaking.

Over 40% of this lush island is protected as national parks and preserves, so take the kids on an exploration of the tropical rainforest areas…plenty of easy trails allow you to discover the natural beauty and abundance of flora and fauna. Wander the animal preserve areas for a closer look at native Australian animals: wombats, wallabies and exotic bird species. It’s also the only place on earth to see the Tasmanian Devil! These nocturnal creatures can often be spotted napping in shady forested areas.

Tasmanians know how to party and have fun, with celebrations throughout the year. Rural and regional events from agricultural shows to music festivals are always a good time, as are state presentations such as the 10 Days on the Island Art Fest, the Marion Bay Fall Fest, and the exciting Road Rally Targa Tasmania which attracts rally drivers from all over the world who come to compete in a 5-day event. The conclusion of the famed Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race ends in Tasmania’s capital city, and is celebrated with food, wine and family-oriented entertainment.

Food is fabulous in Tasmania…fresh-from-the-sea oysters, and a gorgeous countryside dotted with roadside stands where you can find lush berries and just-picked produce. For the adults, there are fine wines said to rival those from France’s champagne region.

Beautiful  beaches invite families to a day of sand, sun and fun…swimming, parasailing, surfing, jet-skiing or just playing in the sand and soaking up the sun. Bike, hike, or just explore the varied Tasmanian landscapes, mountains to sea. Active outdoor kids will find plenty to hold their interest with the recreation available on this lush, unspoiled island!
