As a mom of three boys, my life pretty much revolves around laundry. IT. NEVER. STOPS.I need a detergent that cleans clothes, cuts through tough stains, works well on both whites and colors, eliminates odors, and isn’t full of nasty chemicals. It’s also nice if I can find an affordable option, since I use so much detergent. Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? After searching high and low for a low cost all-in-one option that fits the bill and finding nothing, I decided to make my own DIY laundry bombs. They were easy to make, are much more affordable than store-bought laundry pod options, and work just as well! Here’s how to make your own DIY laundry bombs at home
What You’ll Need:
- Fels-Naptha laundry bar soap or Castile bar soap (I found both of these to be much cheaper online than in my local stores)
- Washing soda (I ordered this online because I couldn’t find it locally anywhere)
- Baking soda
- Table salt or epsom salt
- White Vinegar
- Essential oils in preferred scent (I used lavender)
- Food processor or grater
- air tight container
Instructions:
- Cut soap bar into smaller pieces using a sharp knife and then chop up in your food processor. If you don’t have one, you can grate by hand but this method is much more tedious. Chop entire bar.
- Combine 1 cup of Washing soda, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/4 cup salt or epsom salt, and the chopped bar of soap in a mixing bowl and stir.
- Add 15-20 drops of choice of essential oil to add natural fragrance.
- Add white vinegar 1/4 of a cup at a time and stir until mixture is clumpy but moist enough to stick together.
- Spoon mixture into ice cube trays (this recipe should make approximately two full trays)
- Put ice trays into freezer for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove from freezer and remove pods from tray with a butter knife.
- Put into air tight container and use as needed.
Use one pod for regular loads or two for heavily soiled and bulky loads. Happy washing!
