Target Unveils Wheelchair-Adaptive Line of Halloween Costumes for Kids

If you haven’t seen it yet, Target just unveiled their Hyde and Eek! Boutique on their website and it includes four amazing Halloween costumes for kids that are adaptive for wheelchairs, sensory issues, and other special needs. YES. THIS IS FOR REAL AND WE ARE SO EXCITED!

As a mother of a kiddo who has a life-threatening chronic condition that sometimes means stints with crutches or even a wheelchair, I know first-hand that costumes – for dress up or Halloween – are not only super important to the imagination of my kid, but also super hard to find to accommodate special needs. That’s why my family has become pretty darn good at recreating almost anything with a roll of duct tape and a bunch of cardboard boxes.

These 4 Behaviors Can Be Symptoms of a Bigger Issue

But now, thanks to Target, kids like my son can have the typical experience of shopping for a Halloween costume that is cool, fun, and will also accommodate for special needs.

The four costumes include a pirate with a pirate ship to hide a wheelchair (sold separately), a princess with a chariot (sold separately) and unicorn and shark featuring flat seams and no tags for kids with sensory issues. This is a huge step forward in the direction of inclusivity from Target, and honestly, we’re not surprised.

It wasn’t too long ago that the national retailer made the news with their Cat & Jack kid’s adaptive clothing collection specially designed for kids with special needs. The best part? That collection was inspired by and partly designed by a mom with a child with special needs who understood the challenges that traditionally designed clothes for kids without special needs presented for children like hers.

But Target didn’t stop at adaptive clothing, they also created a super cool collection of home goods all designed to be “sensory-friendly”. The Pillowfort collection includes 20 unique pieces.

“Our design team spent lots of time soaking up guests’ stories and feedback, and then designed every single item in the nearly 20-piece assortment to help meet kids’ and parents’ unique needs and blend beautifully into their homes,” Target said in a press release. “And in true Target style, these pieces are significantly more affordable than most comparable options in the marketplace—prices start at just $20 and everything is under $100.”

It’s encouraging and inspiring to see a company taking progressive steps to make kids of all abilities feel included.

The new Halloween collection is currently available online for pre-order. The costumes range from $20 to $30 and the wheelchairs coverings are $45.
