Thanksgiving is here, so it’s time for lots of fun and tasty food. While you must have thought well about and already planned out your food menu, did you schedule things for the fun part? If not, try this craft — a DIY Thanksgiving hat — for a fun celebration. This DIY is something kids and adults alike can enjoy, making it a great project to spend some quality time together. The best part is that this hat is wearable, so you and your family can rock this DIY craft at the Thanksgiving table or while taking some quirky pictures.
Materials
- Few brown paper grocery sack
- 2 brown paper lunch bags
- Cardboard
- X-acto knife or box cutter
- White paper
- Colored paper scraps
- Craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Pencil
- Glue gun
- Scissors
- Tape measure
Procedure
- To make the DIY Thanksgiving hat, first take a cardboard and draw a large oval on it.
- Then, customize it by measuring the circumference of your head, and draw a circle with the same measurements in the middle of the oval. The circumference should be of the wearer’s head, so make sure to measure your kiddo’s head instead if you are making this Thanksgiving craft for them.
- Now, with the help of a knife or box cutter, cut out the oval and the circle within the oval. This will be your “platter.” Paint the platter in the color of your or your kid’s choice. You can leave the coloring duty to your little ones. Allow to dry.
- Next, take the brown paper sack and lay it flat. Then, cut the sack apart (vertically) into two sections, with one being ⅓ of the width of the bag and the other part being ⅔ of the original width, respectively.
- Discard the larger section of the sack. Now, cut a few inches off of the opened end of the smaller section of the bag that is 1″ deep and ¾″ apart. Then, fringe the cut edge of the smaller section.
- After you are done with the fringe, turn this section of the bag inside out. However, don’t turn the corners of the bag to give your “turkey” a rounded appearance. Fold the fringed edge of the bag along with the two corners of the open end of the bag so that it’s hidden. Stick it in place with hot glue. You will now have a paper dome resembling a turkey’s body.
- Now, it’s time to assemble your DIY Thanksgiving turkey hat. For this, use the glue gun to stick the fringed, folded under edge around the edge of the cutout of the “platter.”
- Then, carefully turn both bags inside out, leaving only the corners unturned to create the round end of your “drumsticks.” Flatten one paper bag. Use your fist to make a cupped shape on the closed end of the bag. Following this, twist the open end tightly to make a turkey drumstick. Follow the same steps with another paper bag as well.
- Now, with scissors make two 2″ strips of white paper. Then, create fringes along the edge of the strips that are about 1″ deep. With the glue gun, wrap one of the strips around the twisted end of each drumstick.
- Then, with fingers, tousle up the fringe. Now, with the help of a hot glue stick, seal the cupped edge and secure drumsticks to either side of the turkey body.
- Lastly, cut thin strips of colored scraps of paper. Crumple those strips and stick them around the turkey’s body. This will be the “stuffing” for your DIY Thanksgiving hat.
