Doggy Downsizing

With the decline in the economy these past few years, along with my own fairly recent move to a smaller place, I’ve definitely had downsizing on my mind in many of my recent articles. So I thought it would be fun to take a look at a few small breed dogs, that can make great “apartment sized”  family pets.

So if you already own a Mastiff, I’m definitely not suggesting that you trade him in for a more compact model just based on his size. It is true that large dogs can successfully live in smaller surroundings, it just takes a very big commitment to make sure the exercise needs of a large dog are met if you live in a condo or apartment.

However, if you don’t already have a dog and are thinking of choosing a dog to live with your family in an apartment or condo, it’s important to take size, temperment and exercise needs into consideration when choosing an appropriate dog for your needs. Of course, you’ll also need to check with your HOA first, to make sure the CC&R’s will allow pets and to be sure you’re aware of any restrictions that might apply.
Here are a 3 fairly compact sized dogs that are known to make great family pets and their size makes them ideal for apartment or condominium living.

Beagles were first recognized in the 1500’s as being sturdy hunting dogs and it was much later on that their agreeable personalities revealed that they also made wonderful family pets. They typically range in size from 13 to 16 inches in height and weigh somewhere between 18-35 pounds on average. The Beagle has a muscular body and a medium-length, smooth hard coat and they appear in a range of colors, although the tricolor is the most common variety.

You might already  be aware that I’m somewhat partial to Golden Retrievers, and that’s part of the reason why I’ve been so taken with these Mini Goldendoodles. This is a fairly recent breed that combines the kind and loyal temperament of a Golden Retriever with the intelligence and agility of a Poodle, but in a compact mini version that weighs between 18-25 pound. And if you have anyone in your family who suffers from allergies, these dogs are hypoallergenic and they don’t shed either! Over the past few years I’ve known several friends who have brought Mini Goldendoodles into their families and they are the most adorable teddy bear-like dogs I’ve ever met, plus their personalities make them almost irresistible.

Boston Terriers are a breed that first originated in America and they’re commonly referred to as the “American Gentleman” due to their gentle temperament, handsome appearance and great suitability as family pets. The American Kennel Club notes them as being highly intelligent, easily trained and friendly, although they can be a little stubborn at times. According to the AKC, they have a lifespan of approximately 11-15 years and they usually weigh somewhere between 10-25 pounds, so they’re a perfect size for living in smaller spaces, yet they also love to go out for walks and socialize.
