K-6 Back to School Apps to Help Moms

The new school year has arrived, so it’s time to sharpen up your Mom Apps Toolbox, so you’ll be ready for it.

Apps can be amazing tools to help you boost your kids education and they’re also super useful for helping to keep you organized throughout the school year. So whether you’re giving your brain a refresher course in order to help out with homework or just trying to determine if your child’s tummy ache or itchy rash is something that should be seen by a doctor, here are 6 great apps every mom should have in her Back to School survival toolbox.

One of the best ways to stay on top of the school year, is by staying healthy, but that can be almost impossible to accomplish when your kids are exposed to so many different illnesses throughout the course of a school year.

So for all those times when your child wakes up in the morning not feeling 100% or comes home from school complaining of a tummy ache or from some unidentifiable itchy rash, check out this KidsDoc App that was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. While this resource should never be used as a substitute for your physician, it’s nice to use as a handy reference tool that can give you some helpful and illustrative resources to help guide you as to where to go next, if your child seems to be a little bit under the weather.

If your little one is headed off to Kindergarten for the first time, this Learn with Homer App is an awesome interactive teaching tool that’s just perfect for ages 3-6 and is compatible with your iPad. Not only are it’s illustrations vivid and engaging, but its a well planned out sequencing tool that helps teach little ones how to begin reading. Plus, it also begins to lay some elementary groundwork for teaching them how to listen first and then respond. What makes this App even more amazing, is that it makes learning seem like playtime, so your child will learn without even realizing it.  Plus it’s totally free, so does it get any better than that?

If you’re anything like me, when your kids begin to bring home their school artwork, you won’t be able to bear parting with any of it.  So as an alternative to needing to move out of your house because its bursting at the seams from storing all your kid’s artwork, check out this cool Artkive App. It’s a super cool solution for storing your kids artwork forever, but without needing to fill up 10 closets to do so.  This App also makes it so you can share your kids artwork with their Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles & Cousins. Plus, it has a great option that allows you to make a book of your kids personalized artwork to keep for yourself, give away as a gift or archive as a memory for your child to have later in life.

Here’s another great App that’s absolutely free and it reminds me a little bit of the ad libs we used to put together when we were kids. You’ll love playing SparkleFish with your kids, not only as a learning tool that will help teach them to think quickly on their feet, but it’s also a great game to help pass the time on long car rides or while waiting for appointments, etc.  It’s designed for both your iPhone and your iPad, so you can always have it handy when you need it.

Recently there’s been a lot of press given to the subject of how deficient American schools have become in both math and the sciences. So rather than leaving this responsibility totally up to our schools, this Subtracting Sardines App provides a great way for parents to begin to enhance their kids education by introducing elementary math skills and concepts to our kids at home, to supplement and reinforce the concepts they are receiving at school.

The Britannica Kids Apps are a great educational series and one of their newest editions is this Solar System App that makes exploring the secrets of the universe fun. This App makes learning fun, by implementing a variety of games and puzzles that are well illustrated with some amazingly engaging images. It’s a great tool for getting your kids both interested and engaged in exploring the 8 major planets, along with their moons, comets, suns in addition to introducing concepts of gravity and space.
