On Feb. 10, 2024, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker issued a press release stating that a Kansas City mom put her infant down in an oven for a nap. This led to the 1-month-old’s death. The mother was charged with endangering the welfare of a child (via The Guardian).
Police responded to a report on Feb. 9, 2024, of a baby allegedly not breathing. Responders noticed burns on the infant’s body, noting it down as the probable cause of death in their statement. Moreover, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene itself.
The statement didn’t offer much explanation except for a witness statement stating that the Kansas City mom accidentally put her child down in the oven instead of the crib for the kid’s nap.

The mother was identified as Mariah Thomas, a Missouri resident. The Kansas City mom has been arrested and charged with a Class A felony. The 26-year-old first-degree endangered the welfare of a child, according to the Jackson County press release (via ABC News).
Police were dispatched to the Manheim Park neighborhood at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The infant’s grandfather gave a statement to the police. As per the court records, it is unclear if the Kansas City mom has an attorney representing her. However, she could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
According to a criminal complaint filed, the 1-month-old baby girl was found in a car seat in the living room with thermal injuries on various parts of her body. Clothed in a bodysuit over her diaper, the clothing had melted onto the diaper. There was also a baby blanket with significant burn marks (via People).
