Halle Berry Custody Battle Turns Murky Amid Reported $200K Legal Fees

Halle Berry has spoken out amid her bitter custody battle with her ex-husband, Olivier Martinez. The latest court documents have revealed that the actress has claimed she spent over $200,000 in legal fees. Berry and Martinez’s divorce was finalized in 2023 after nearly eight years. Since then, the strained relationship between the two has affected the co-parenting of their 10-year-old son, Maceo.

Per US Weekly, Berry filed the latest paperwork on September 3. The actress claimed that her ex-husband has “refused to co-parent and communicate” with her in a “child-centered way.” The 58-year-old added that Martinez has been “oppositional and unmovable on all major issues relating to Maceo.” Berry seeks the court’s help as she has “done everything possible to work with Olivier” — from communicating with him to engaging him in the “decision-making process” regarding Maceo.

Amid the custody battle, Hally Berry also claimed she spent over $200,000 in legal fees. It includes a voluntary $80,000 contribution to Martinez’s legal expenses. Berry also alleged that Martinez delayed undergoing co-parenting therapy under court stipulation.

Earlier this year, she claimed that the latter had not attended joint co-parenting therapy sessions. Following that, Berry tried to seek sole legal custody of Maceo. However, Martinez also filed his request for sole legal custody of their son. The two have since made several accusations against each other.

When the divorce was finalized last year, Berry and Martinez agreed to share joint legal and physical custody of their son. The “X-Men” actress was ordered to pay her ex-husband $8,000 a month in child support. In addition, Berry was told to pay Martinez 4.3% of any income she received over $2 million.

In the recent paperwork, Berry claimed that her ex-husband lives off of her payments in child support. Martinez also allegedly objected to paying for a home visit with the therapist when the actress had a free window. Berry stated that she has to go to work to pay child support. She added that she does not “have the luxury of taking months off.” The actress wrote in the document she wasn’t in a position to change her work schedule to “accommodate Olivier’s whims.”

Berry and Martinez have the next hearing set for September 10.
