A six-month pregnant Alexandra Austin took the lead during stroke play’s opening round at the 2024 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship, which was held at the Brae Burn Country Club in West Newton, Massachusetts. Golf Digest reported that the 31-year-old golfer posted a two-under 70 that was exceeded by almost making an ace on the 217-yard par-3 17th. She was the only player who managed to shoot under par in the 132-player field in the first round.
Alexandra Austin is an insurance agent from Fairfax, Virginia, who is competing for the fourth time in the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. A year ago, she landed in the quarterfinals. She also reached the semifinals, alongside Lauren Greenlief, in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball in 2016.

Golfer Alexandra Austin held the lead at the 37th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship after nearly making a hole-in-one in the field. She did this while being six months pregnant with her baby boy, who is due in January. She revealed the news of her pregnancy with an Instagram post, which she captioned, “Our greatest adventure begins January 2025.”
Per Golf Digest, when asked about her almost making an ace, the soon-to-be mother said, “I hit 3-wood. It was almost going in. I was like, Oh that’d be great, and then I can’t drink.” On her inward nine, she made three birdies and went on to make just one bogey on her round to make the only score under par. Many struggled due to the highly challenging conditions on that day in eastern Massachusetts. The average scoring winding up for the field in round 1 was 8.1 strokes over par.
While talking about her early lead, Alexandra Austin said, “I didn’t really think it was going to be the low round.” She further explained, “I just hit it well tee-to-green and then made some putts whenever I could.”
The 18-hole championship match for the 2024 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Golf Championship is scheduled for September 12.
