Jennie Garth talks about how two miscarriages impacted her marriage

In an emotional moment, Jennie Garth and her husband, Dave Abrams, talked about the time when she suffered two consecutive miscarriages soon after their marriage. The couple, who wed in 2015, decided to share this vulnerable moment in hopes of helping others. Abrams revealed that Garth was pregnant with their first child the same month they tied the knot. He recalled the pregnancy only lasted four months. However, Garth failed to remember the incident.

While Garth confessed that the pregnancy happened “naturally,” Abrams was surprised but excited. Unfortunately, after four months, the couple found out that there was no heartbeat. Abrams maintained that although he was “upset,” it wasn’t directed towards his wife but on the situation. Although the duo was advised to get a dilation and curettage procedure (DNC), Garth wanted to wait.

She said, “I think I remember them saying, like, we could just wait and let it work its way. Let nature take its course or we could do the procedure. And we opted to do the procedure because it was just too much for me to, you know, carry it — a baby that had been terminated.”

According to Mayo Clinic, DNC is a medical procedure to remove tissue from inside a person’s uterus. Patients undergo this to treat uterine conditions like heavy bleeding. In addition, healthcare professionals perform the procedure to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion.

Garth apparently had the procedure the same day that the couple heard that the baby didn’t have a heartbeat. However, just when they thought a baby wasn’t meant to be, she was pregnant again, and that too naturally. The actor confessed to not remembering this one as well. Meanwhile, Abrams revealed that the second miscarriage was shorter than the first one.

Abrams said, “I remember we had to switch doctors, and this one was only, you know, you found out you got pregnant. And then this was only like a month and a half.” He revealed that Garth had to undergo the DNC procedure again, further recalling how the two consecutive miscarriages had taken a toll on their marriage.

Recalling the turbulent time, Abrams said that the consecutive miscarriages took “an emotional toll” on them, and they “didn’t know how to communicate at the time.” As a result, they “just wrapped it up,” after which “other things kind of came in the fold.” He recalled that their relationship got “chaotic” as they didn’t have the “tools equipped to work through it.”

The couple noted that they went to therapy but they couldn’t open up about the grief and “deep sadness” they felt for each other. Garth also added her take to the story. She chose to struggle on her own when she saw her husband do the same thing. On the other hand, Abrams recalled questioning himself if he was being too emotional about this.

Garth admitted to feeling “down on myself” and “ashamed” for not being able to give her husband a baby. However, she remembered being grateful to Abrams for becoming a “wonderful stepdad” to her three daughters — Luca, Lola, and Fiona.

Previously, the “Beverly Hills, 90210” actor revealed in an interview with SELF how their difficult IVF journey led to the couple separating for 10 months. After multiple unsuccessful attempts, they let go of the possibility of having a child together. They filed for divorce in April 2018, but Abrams filed a petition to dismiss divorce proceedings in February 2019.
