Tom Hanks opens up about his childhood and its influence on his parenting style
During his appearance on the “On Purpose Podcast,” Tom Hanks recalled his childhood and shared that his home environment was “fluid” and they “moved a lot” after his parents divorced. The actor said, “We were suddenly living with a whole different set of people because, you know, my parents got remarried.”
Hanks continued to recall that by the time he turned 10, he had lived in 10 different homes. “I am not intimidated by it and I don’t think I’m damaged by it at all,” he said. Through the changes, Hanks shared he tried to figure out “the easiest way to get comfortable.”
At one point during the conversation, Hanks recalled the dynamics with his father, a DIY expert who could “fix everything.” The actor’s dad didn’t believe in spending “a lot of money” and preferred to make their own stuff. After recalling an amplifier-making incident, Hanks said, “My dad was so miserable.” The actor continued to mimic his father’s voice, “Don’t you know how to solder,” and added, “It’s a perspective of everything.”
Following that, Shetty asked Hanks if he tried to parent differently. The actor said, “You know you tried to but I made every mistake.” Hanks added, “You scar the kids somehow in the same exact way.” However, the star added he looked back on his past behavior as the kids got older. Hanks further shared that the “attitude” came up to be “50-50.” He added, “The life that we led, the laughs, you know, that stuff’s worth its weight.”
