Jeannie Mai, who has a 2-year-old daughter named Monaco Mai Jenkins, recently disclosed her doubts about becoming a mom. In an interview with PEOPLE, she discussed the reasons behind her personal doubts about motherhood.
The television host explained, “I think the best part about me being a mom is that I actually owned that I doubted myself.” She continued, “I didn’t know why I had such walls up about my own abilities.” Mai then revealed that she has “learned that it came from a lot of childhood trauma.” She elaborated, “Things that happened in my childhood that I blamed myself for,” further adding, “I still carry guilt [because] I have resentment towards people.”
Jeannie Mai expressed that these things should not be brought into motherhood. However, she acknowledged that “they exist.” Thus, her advice was “to know that they’re there so you acknowledge them.” She emphasized, “Make a clear distinction of who you are today versus where you were then.”
“The Real” host shared more advice to women facing self-doubts regarding their motherhood journey. She affirmed, “For the woman who is not quite ready to be a mom and is maybe doubting herself — that’s okay.” Mai added that these feelings are “valid” and one must eventually learn “to lean into” them. She also talked about how she believed that understanding these self-doubts can ultimately bring a person to self-acceptance. The television personality claimed, “Any of those doubts and feelings are actually part of why you’re going to be a bomb mom.”
