I Resolve…

I’m a sucker for New Year’s Resolutions.

Big time.

Every year, they’re pretty much the same: lose weight, finish writing a book, run a marathon. (To be honest, that was only once and I really think post pregnancy hormones mixed with a Biggest Loser marathon made me a little insane.)

And every year, as tradition dictates, I break my resolutions by February. Although sometimes I last until April.

It doesn’t stop me, though, from making them year after year. And this year, well, I have more than one reason to work on my resolutions. Last year wasn’t a great year for me. After eight years of marriage, my husband and I decided to divorce. Well, he decided.  And when one partner decides, the other really has no choice in the matter. Needless to say, it was a rough year.

Which means I have high hopes for 2012.

Very high hopes.

Well, moderately high.

And my resolutions reflect that. Sure, I have the standards: lose weight, finish writing a book, not run a marathon. But this year I also have some new ones: be more organized, be more present when my children are with me, get back to making healthy meals, spend more time doing things for me.

This year too, I’m going to cut myself and the kids some slack. Instead of enforcing strict screen time rules, I’m going to be more flexible. I’m going to let them pick one dinner a week. And we’re going to go out to eat at least twice a month – and not to a fast food place. Somewhere where we can sit and practice our table manners. Last year was a fog. This year is going to be about fun.

What are your resolutions this year? Are you planning on keeping them or are you, like me, hoping to make it at least six months?
