The Ten Moms You’ll Meet at School This Year

It’s that time of year again. School is in session, fall is on the horizon, and a crisp sense of possibility permeates the air. It’s not just the scent of pumpkin spice and school supplies—it’s the promise of new opportunity.

There are new teachers and new classmates. New rules, and, yes, new moms you’ll encounter at school pick-up, drop-off, and PTA meetings. Sure, you’ll know some of these moms already particularly if your kids have been in school for a while.

However, if you’re new to the scene, or just getting into the swing of things again, you’ll soon be introduced to a whole new cast of characters.

These are the ten moms you’ll meet at school this year.

1. The Organizer

You’ll know The Organizer when you see her, and you won’t have to look hard to find her because she’ll probably see you first and introduce herself. This mom knows everything and everyone.

She’ll know all your kids’ names, birthdates, and food allergies. She’ll arrange the class gift at holidays and at the end of the school year. When someone’s sick, she’ll drop by with flowers and chicken soup she made herself.

Even if you consider yourself a together-enough person, you’ll still be blown away by The Organizer’s organizational skills and ability to stay on top of things.

2. The Hot Mess

If you’re a punctual person, you probably won’t bump into The Hot Mess right away. She’s usually behind schedule, so by the time she arrives, you’ve already left.

Still, at some point during the school year, your paths will cross. She’ll probably spill her coffee as she trips over her own mismatched shoes. You’ll ask if she’s coming to the school social on Saturday and she’ll reply, “what social?”.

When you see this mom, give her a break. She means well and loves hard, and we’ll all be her at one point, even if only for a moment.

3. The Been There Done That Lady

Nothing is new for this experienced mom. When you’re in tears leaving your firstborn on his first day of school, she’s dropping off her youngest child and riding away into the sunset. It’s not that she doesn’t care—she’s just been there, done that.

She knows all the teachers in every grade, could navigate the school drop-off line with her eyes closed, and knows what foods are off-limits without even having to check the school allergies handout.

If you have a question and don’t feel like consulting The Organizer, BTDT mom will have the answer.

4. The Momager

You won’t have to ask who The Momager is—she’ll tell you. She’s the “momager” of her daughter’s softball team and of her son’s soccer team. When she’s not busy managing her kids’ extracurricular activities, she’s the room mom in your child’s class.

She’ll attend all school field trips from nursery school through college. You’ll see her so often, you’ll wonder why she’s not on the school’s payroll.

Yes, sometimes, it can be overwhelming to be in The Momager’s presence, but don’t forget that being The Momager can get overwhelming, too. And at the heart of it all, The Momager wants to be appreciated just like everyone else.

5. The Expectant Mother

You’ll most likely to bump into The Expectant Mother if your kids are young, but she can make an appearance in any grade. This mom is still growing her brood.

She’ll waddle toward you, a warm smile on her face and exhaustion in her weary eyes, and you’ll reminisce about the days when you were still growing your family.

Still, as you glide past The Expectant Mother feeling semi-rested and fully caffeinated, you’ll definitely be glad that this time it’s her and not you.

6. The Cool Mom

She’s not like a regular mom; she’s a cool mom. She’d never be caught dead in a minivan. She drives an Infiniti QX80, which, by the way, is completely spotless.

Unless she’s on her way to Power Yoga, you won’t find her in spandex. No, her distressed boyfriend jeans and moto jacket pair well with her suede booties.

She hosts the best sleepovers and has the most perfectly curated Instagram you’ve ever seen.

Still, don’t hate on The Cool Mom—she’s got her struggles just like everyone else.

7. The Drama Queen

Is this The Real Housewives of Atlanta? Is there a camera crew hiding in the bushes? The Drama Queen sure acts like it. Everything is a big deal for this mom.

From homework to spring break, The Drama Queen has an opinion about everything and isn’t afraid to let you know it.

Sure, the required font size on your eighth-grader’s book report doesn’t seem like it warrants a call to the local news, but hey—that’s The Drama Queen’s problem, not yours.

8. The Cup Holder

Whether she’s ten minutes early or fifteen minutes late, this mom will always have a cup of her favorite beverage in hand. Maybe she prefers coffee or maybe she’s a PSL-loving girl at heart.

Whatever her drink, you can be sure that she will be sipping it as watches all the drama unfold at the PTA meeting.

9. The Newbie

Every year seems to bring a family who is new in town and new to the school. Maybe this mom moved here from out of state, or maybe she’s from the next school district over.

Whatever the case, save a seat for The Newbie, and teach your kids to do the same. It’s not easy being new, and a little kindness can go a long way toward making them feel at home.

Being In Middle School Was Hard. Having A Kid In Middle School Is Agony.

10. The Dad

This mom isn’t a mom at all, but a dad. This guy is breaking down stereotypes one school pickup at a time. Whether he’s a stay-at-home dad, a work-from-home dad, or a dad with a flexible schedule, he’s the one who does the heavy lifting when it comes to childcare.

And why not? It’s 2018, not the 1950’s. You go ahead, Room Dad.

Do you have anyone to add to the list?

Wishing you a happy and healthy school year!
