Amanda Gorman Credits Mom for Believing in Her Dreams

Amanda Gorman, an exceptionally talented 23-year-old poet and activist, told The Tonight Show host Jimmy Falon on Tuesday—calmly and confidently—that she will be running for president in 2036.

“I’ve known that for quite some time,” Gorman said, matter-of-factly, “I was 9 or 10, and I came home and I was like, ‘You know, Mom, I want to change some things in this world, so I’m going to run for president.'”

We Certainly Believe Her, and So Does Mom

“I have such an incredible mom that she knew this wasn’t a joke; she knew this wasn’t an idle word that I tossed out just for giggles,” Gorman said in praise of her mother’s instincts.

If the manner in which she said that, so confidently—on national television—is any indication of how determined she must have sounded in that moment at home, I would have been as instantly supportive of the idea as mom was.

It’s no surprise that Gorman has inspired this same kind of confidence within the rest of her family, as well. After reciting her own poem at Joe Biden’s inauguration, and then another at the Super Bowl, not to mention being invited to the Met Gala, Amanda Gorman is poised to take the world by storm.

Prepared for the Road Ahead

Gorman’s twin sister, Gabrielle, takes her sister’s dream of becoming president so seriously that she catches people before they take pictures of her at parties. “They know the campaign is real,” Gorman explains, “We just orient our lives living to our best values because we know at one point in time I will aspire to the highest seat of power in the country, so you gotta be prepared.”

Prepared she shall be, given that she already has an articulate understanding, at such a young age, of the issues that will inevitably be dominant by the time she runs. Issues such as environmentalism, which Gorman had this to say to PopSugar on the subject of, “If we don’t make some real and tectonic change in the regard, all the other issues we want to bring to the table will be tied to and exacerbated by the dwindling health of our planet.”

Honestly, I would vote for Amanda Gorman right now. She’s going to make mom very proud, indeed.
