How To Make DIY Slime for Kids

Does your kid love playing with slime? Do they always insist on buying a new one when you get to the aisle with store shelves stacked to the top with the same? Buying more slime every shopping trip won’t be easy on your pockets and isn’t a practical solution for the long term. So, how about you make DIY slime at home for your kiddos and surprise them with the same? Alternatively, you can make a wide variety of slime with your little ones for an added activity to keep them engaged.

You just need a few materials to start your DIY slime project. Most of them are readily available at home, and the DIY project will take next to no time. Plus, slime is excellent for sensory activity, especially for younger kids.

Top Tip: Making and playing with homemade slime can get messy, so lay a placemat, plastic tablecloth, or a trash bag so that slime doesn’t stick to your table or carpet.

Also, if your kid has sensitive skin, make sure they wear gloves while playing with it to avoid any reactions later. Store slime in a plastic container with a lid or a zip lock bag after they are done playing to prevent it from drying.

Materials

  • 1 cup of Elmer’s White School Glue
  • 1 ½ – 2 tablespoons contact saline solution (or slime activator)
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Food coloring (optional)

Procedure

  1. Start making the DIY slime by pouring glue into a large bowl.
  2. If you want colored slime, add a few drops of food color to the glue and stir until combined. Make sure you get the color you want before adding anything else, as adjusting the color once the solution begins to harden is difficult.
  3. Add baking soda to the glue and stir well.
  4. Then, add saline solution or slime activator to the mixture and combine it all.
  5. If the dough is too sticky, add another ½ tablespoon of solution/activator to get the perfect consistency. The more you add, the thicker it will be, so proceed accordingly.
  6. Once all things are combined, knead the slime until it holds together.
  7. The slime might be wet and gooey initially, but keep kneading until it all comes together and holds its shape.
  8. Now, pull apart and let the fun begin!

You can double or triple the DIY slime recipe based on your child’s needs. Moreover, you can make slime even more fun by adding glitters, styrofoam balls, scented oils, etc., along with the food color. However, ensure your and your little one’s hair is tied up while playing with slime, as it might get stuck in your hair. If that happens, simply rub some coconut or olive oil on the affected area and comb it out.
