Easy DIY Messenger Bag for Kids

Messenger bags are fashionable, functional, and also fun for kids. They come in various shapes and sizes and have fun prints that kids love.

However, did you know you can easily make messenger bags with any old fabric at home? Moreover, it doesn’t require expert-level skills to make the bag. Even with basic sewing, you can make a cute messenger bag for your kids.

Materials

  • 1⁄3 yard fabric x 2 (if using a directional fabric, you’ll need ½ yard instead)
  • Mini messenger bag pattern pieces

Procedure

  1. To make the messenger bag for kids, cut out the fabric pieces by folding the fabric and then placing your pattern pieces with a straight edge on the fold.
  2. Cut one front piece and one back with a flap from each fabric. You should now have four pieces.
  3. Then, you need to cut out a strap. Cut a piece from each fabric three inches wide by about 38 inches long. You should now have six pieces of fabric to work with.
  4. Sew the strap first. Put the right sides (the one with the prints) together and sew both long sides, leaving the ends open. Turn it right side out, press it, and then top the stitch.
  5. Using your other pieces, put the right sides together on matching fabrics and sew around the edges of the front part on the three outer edges. Do this step with both of your fabrics.
  6. Sew the strap first. Put the right sides together and sew down both long sides, leaving the ends open. Turn it right side out, press it, and then top the stitch.
  7. Using your other pieces, put the right sides together on matching fabrics and sew around the edges of the front part on the three outer edges. Do this step with both of your fabrics.
  8. Match up the sides of the messenger bag and the flap and pin everything together.
  9. Now, you will sew around the bag starting at the top, down the side, across the centerpiece (only catching the front pieces), and up the other side, leaving a 3-4 inch opening at the top to turn it.
  10. Now, turn everything right side out and tuck the inner part into the outer. Press the opening closed and top stitch around the part you just sewed. This will close your opening and make everything look nice.
  11. Press the whole messenger bag, and you are set!

Surprise your kids with this DIY messenger bag and see them smiling ear to ear. Let them fill the bag with accessories or snacks while carrying it outside. Once you get the basic idea, you can make bigger messenger bags for your teens.
