DIY Pinecone Snowy Owl for Kids That Is Perfect for Winter

With kids spending most of their time indoors, you need some easy winter craft ideas to keep them occupied. What’s better than pinecone crafts that they can make using the ones they picked during the fall season? Since they are easily available and little ones love to collect them to either play with them or add to their collection, you can make good use of their finds to create something adorable. So, try this DIY snowy owl craft with your kids this winter. They will not only love making them but will also look forward to it every cozy season.

Materials

  • Pinecones (pick medium-sized ones; they should not be too big or small)
  • Black felt
  • Yellow felt
  • White felt
  • 2 googly eyes, large
  • Sharpie marker
  • Cotton balls (about 15 per owl)
  • Hot glue or tacky glue

Procedure

  1. To make the DIY pinecone snowy owl, first select the right-sized pinecone. Then, take your cotton bundle and pull it apart into smaller pieces. This is an important step as an entire cotton ball won’t fit, and they won’t look as fluffy that way anyway. It’s also an excellent motor skill exercise for kids, so feel free to hand them this task.
  2. Once done, poke the cotton in between the scales of the pinecone. If your pinecones are a bit too poky, either make your kids wear gloves or use some tool to place the cotton balls in between the scales easily without getting poked by them.
  3. Once your pinecone is adequately “snowy,” and you are satisfied with the coverage, bring out the felt to make the eyes, beak, and wings of the owl.
  4. For this, cut out wings from white felt. Draw some markings on the wings with the help of the marker. If your child is making owlets, make small black markings on the wings. Adult males are almost completely white, so no need to make markings if you are making those. However, adult females have some black barring. So, let your kids decide the type of marking they want on their owl’s wings.
  5. Then, take black felt and cut out a beak from it. Make two circles (slightly larger than your googly eyes) from yellow felt while you are at it.
  6. Now, with the help of hot glue, stick the googly eyes to the yellow circles. You can now assemble your DIY snowy owl by gluing the eyes, beak, and wings to the pinecon. Make sure not to glue them to the cotton balls as they might fall off almost immediately due to not being attached to the actual pinecone.

This winter, you can proudly display your kid’s attempt at a DIY pinecone snowy owl in your house. This is a fun decoration as well as parent-child activity idea for the cozy season as you can make an owl family together. Moreover, you can use colorful cotton balls to make a vibrant owl, if that’s what your kiddos love. So, gather all the pinecones they have collected over fall and get crafty with your little ones.
