Understanding TikTok and its Parental Controls

TikTok is one of the most popular social media apps among teens and young people, with over a billion users. As a parent it can be overwhelming to keep up with the ever changing social media trends that target our children. With the growing popularity of TikTok it is important for parents to understand the benefits and concerns the app creates for young people. What is TikTok?

TikTok is a social network video sharing app that allows users to create short form videos on the topic of their choosing. Creators have access to a library of filters, effects and music

Age Restrictions

TikTok recommends user be at least 13 years old, however users under the age of 18 must have approval of a parent or guardian. Users under the age of 13 will be able to view curated videos but not post their own videos, leave comments or search.

Violence

There is very little violence on TikTok. User may occasionally see fighting or weapons.

Profanity

Swearing is not banned on TikTok so user may encounter an endless number of swear words.

The only exception is racial slurs or hate speech, which do violate the term and conditions.

Mature Content

Sexual innuendo and revealing clothing may be seen by users

Users may encounter references to drugs, drinking and smoking.

Parental Controls

TikTok does offer some parental controls. For filters to work properly users must enter their birth date which will restrict access to certain features and exposure to inappropriate content. TikTok also offers Family Pairing which lets parents link their TikTok account to their teen’s to enable content and privacy settings. The app also offers Screen Time Limits which include Daily Screen Time and Restricted Mode, which are pass code protected, set by the parent. Restricted Mode allows parents to limit content that is violent or sexual, limits screen time and disables private messaging.
