Easy DIY Heart-Shaped Crayons for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and we are sure you must be looking for cute last-minute gift ideas for your tiny tot. The good news is that we have an easy DIY gift idea that your kids will appreciate, especially if they like coloring or arts and crafts. These DIY heart-shaped crayons are easy to make and can be customized to your little one’s liking.

So, if you have a bucket of broken crayons, leftover bits that are just begging for a new life, this is the perfect excuse to turn them into easy-to-grab crayons that even the littlest hands can grab and draw with. You can also use a new set of crayons to make this cute DIY set if you can’t find any leftover crayon pieces or threw them away right before stumbling across this article.

Materials

  • Crayons (broken or new)
  • Microwave or oven-safe silicone heart mold
  • Kitchen knife
  • Cutting board
  • Paper towels (optional)

Procedure

  1. To make this DIY heart-shaped crayon, start by deciding on crayon colors. You can mix two complementary or similar colors for each heart-shaped crayon.
  2. Keep the assorted colors together to avoid mixing up while working on this DIY heart-shaped crayon.
  3. Peel the paper wrapping off of the crayons. If you are using broken crayons, remove any dirt that might have stuck to its surface. Having a clean crayon before you start working on this DIY project would be best.
  4. With the help of a sharp kitchen knife, chop the crayons into approximately ¼-inch pieces.
  5. Fill the heart-shaped molds with the chopped crayons. You will need 2-3 crayons per cup.
  6. Keep the mold inside the microwave and heat it (place a paper towel underneath to wipe away any spillage easily).
  7. Make sure to check the mold after every 1-2 minutes until the crayons are thoroughly melted. Alternatively, you can melt the crayons in a preheated oven (150 degrees Fahrenheit) and bake it for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Once the crayons have melted, remove them from the microwave/oven and cool completely. Don’t touch the melted crayons, as it can cause burns. If you are making them with your kids, make sure they are at a safe distance while removing them from the microwave to avoid any injury from accidental spills.
  9. After the melted crayons have been set, pop them out of their molds and start coloring!
