vitamin D

Want a Strong Baby? Research Reveals that High Levels of this Vitamin in Preggos Builds Tough Tots

The study (lead by Dr Nicholas Harvey, Senior Lecturer at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRC LEU) at the University of Southampton) measured the levels of vitamin D in 678 expectant mothers who were the later stages of pregnancy. Four years later, their children were tested for grip strength and muscle mass. The results showed a strong correlation between the level of vitamin D in the mother (when she as pregnant) and the increased strength of the child.

Researchers think this study may have larger implications—it is possoble that high levels of vitamin D in pregnant women could (maybe) have result in better health in their children/ After all, low grip strength in adulthood has been associated with poor health outcomes including diabetes, falls and fractures.

What’s the takeaway? Talk to your OB about your levels of vitamin D and find out if you need a boost!
