Banana Bread Smoothie Recipe

We love smoothie breakfasts. They’re fast, the clean up is easy, they’re easy to eat (especially for kids with braces), and I can sneak all sorts of healthy ingredients in them and no one is the wiser.

This banana bread smoothie uses ingredients you might find in your favorite banana bread recipe. It relies on the banana itself and a tiny bit of pure maple syrup for its sweetness. I use oatmeal to fortify it with whole grains and fiber, and a handful of walnuts for a little boost of omega-3s.

The beauty of this smoothie is that it’s ideal for beneficial add-ins. Try tossing in a tablespoon of chia seeds or ground golden flax seeds. If you need a boost of protein, add a scoop of protein powder or a spoonful of almond butter.

Also, my favorite way to enjoy the walnuts in this recipe is to soak them for 24 hours prior to mixing them in. The soaking softens them and takes away the tannic acid that makes them bitter, making them perfect for blending in this smoothie. Any extras can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, and they’re delicious for snacking. If you don’t have the extra day to soak them, don’t fret, though. Toss them into the smoothie anyway, and it will still be great.
