Materials

  • One batch of white cake batter
  • Black edible dough
  • Small letter cutters
  • Wax paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Loaf pan (9 x 5), generously greased with baking spray
  • Small loaf pan, generously greased with baking spray

Procedure

  1. To make the secret message cake recipe for Halloween, soften the edible black dough before use. Do this by taking small sections of the dough and kneading it between your fingers until it has softened. Continue until all the dough is soft and easy to shape.
  2. Then, roll out the softened dough to between ⅛” and ¼” thickness and cut out your letters (one “B” and two “O”s).
  3. Once all the letters have been cut out, add enough batter to the bottom of the loaf pan to cover the bottom of the utensil.
  4. Now, begin setting your letters upright in the pan. Repeat the word over and over, for the length of the pan, leaving about ½” between the words.
  5. Then, gently spoon batter on top of the letters until they are completely covered, and fill the pan until it is ⅔ full.
  6. Use any leftover batter to make an additional cake in the small loaf pan.
  7. Bake the 9 x 5 loaf pan cake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean.
  8. For the cake in the small loaf pan, bake for around 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean.
  9. Lastly, de-mold your secret message cake after five minutes on a cooling rack and allow it to come to room temperature before expertly slicing it to add a spooky factor to your Halloween.

If your kiddos enjoy some frosting on top, frost it once the cake cools down completely. Slice using a sharp knife and see your children jumping with joy when the letters are revealed.
