Freezing Homemade Baby Food: What to Expect

The simplest and most economical way to store homemade baby food is to freeze it.  Now I love all the wonderful “baby food” containers that are on the market (for example, check out my favorite containers from Wean Green and also Baby Cubes) that make freezing homemade baby food easier. However, you don’t have to buy any specialized containers, regular ice cube trays will work just as well and are friendlier to your wallet as well. Using ice cube trays, you can store baby food in stacks that will keep your freezer organized and use little space. Another benefit to using ice cube trays is that you will know that each individual portion is equal to approximately 1 ounce.

To freeze homemade baby foods, allow the food to cool then puree or mash as needed.  Once the food has been prepared, spoon it into ice cube trays. Before putting the trays into the freezer, cover the ice cube trays with wrap or foil.  When the foods have frozen solid, you may then remove the cubes from the trays and transfer the cubes to a freezer bag for storage.  You may notice some ice crystal build-up on the food cubes.  Do not be alarmed about the build-up of ice crystals; this is not freezer burn and the baby food cubes are perfectly safe to use.  Freezer burn looks grey in color and also has a texture of dried out leather; you will not mistake the look of freezer burn when you see it for ice crystals.  Now you can see how easy and convenient it is to freeze homemade baby foods and I hope you will give it a try.
